Tsavo East National Park

Tsavo National Park covers an area of 21,812 Km2 and is the largest Park in Kenya. The Park is divided by Nairobi–Mombasa railway /road into Tsavo East and Tsavo West.

Tsavo East consists mainly of flat, open savannahs without dense vegetation giving it's visitors better options for wildlife viewing – for many the main reason to go on a safari. Typical of Tsavo East is the magnificent red-brown color of the earth and roads, and the lonely baobab trees on the savannah plains. Of interest in the park include the Yatta Plateau, which at 290 kilometers is the world’s longest lava flow, which runs along the western border of the park. The Lugard's Falls, named after British colonial administrator Frederick Lugard, is actually a series of rapids on the Galana river.

Tsavo East is a very popular Park as indicated by the high number of tourists who visit the park. Some of the attractive scenic features include; large herds of elephants Rhinos, Hirola (Hunters Hartebeest) and other wildlife, Yatta plateau – about 290Km long and is one of the worlds longest lava flows, Lugards Falls on the Galana river – This is not a true falls but a series of rapids. Visitors can walk down to the river to view the rapids, Mudanda rock – This is a long rock outcrop that is about 1.6Km long. There is a dam at the base. Animals can be seen drinking. Visitors can walk along the rock and enjoy a cool breeze as well as view wildlife at the base, The Aruba Dam - built in 1952 across the Voi river. The dam attracts many animals and water birds can be seen at this dam, Tsavo/Athi rivers confluence – when the two rivers join they form the Galana river.

Pretty unique is the population of Hirola antelopes, which has been decimated during the last decades by poachers. Tsavo East now harbors a quarter of the total Kenyan Hirola antelope population of about 500. There are also some 50 black rhinos in Tsavo East.
Furthermore, the park is home to over 500 bird species, among which are buzzards, kestrels, weaver birds, starlings, herons, secretary birds, kingfishers and ostriches.

Tsavo east proximity to Mombasa makes it a popular tourist destination. You can have 1 day safari to Tsavo east to 5 days safari combining both Tsavo east and Tsavo west with visits to sanctuaries like The Taita Saltlick and the Ngutuni Sanctuary
